5 Unique Places to Buy Valentine’s Day Gifts
We are almost in February. Valentine’s Day is only a couple of weeks away.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
If you are like most people, you will be taking your loved one out for a good meal, buying some flowers, and eating chocolates. But, if you want to get a little crazy and if your loved one isn’t interested in snowboards, skateboards, and or surfboards or has all the outdoor gear they are happy with right now, then what? Well, I put together a list of people and places specializing in art and design worthy of mention.
As a kid, my godfather owned and ran the Spiral Shop Art Gallery, and I spend a lot of my childhood at his house with my parents having dinner and sitting in the gardens. I also spent my middle school years working as his assistant when he organized the Haystack Art show and had no idea how lucky I was! My father once surprised me with a painting that I had admired at that show.
5 Unique Places to Purchase Your Valentine’s Day Gifts
I first met Mason Parker when he was an apprentice to my godfather, Harold Makepeace. He worked in the Spiral Shop Gallery and lived on the property in Marlboro, VT. Mason now lives in Portland, Oregon, where he handcraft’s the most beautiful stained glass chandeliers, including these amazing Octopus ones. He’s also one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Alex creates the most adorable must-have Little Bird Art, from pink flamingos to owls, seagulls, and robins. She captures the attitude and the soul of each creature magnificently. She lives in Portsmouth, NH, and her uniquely captivating artwork is on display and for sale at many local cafes and restaurants.
I first met Carl when I brought him some jewelry that I never wear. Carl, who is from Portugal, is a 5th generation jeweler. He designs custom pieces using CAD (computer automated design) and then brings each custom piece to life, identical to his CAD vision. Carl does everything himself from the same day while you wait for a jewelry cleaning and in-house jewelry and watch repairs to custom handcrafted creations. He’s also one of the most interesting people you will ever meet and is a fantastic storyteller.
While Mamadou doesn’t design or create his pieces, he does have an eye for beautiful jewelry, and he also offers in-house repair and cleaning. He is also an interesting man from Senegal, West Africa. And he is earnest about helping people find the right piece for the right occasion or repairing pieces that need a little love.
5. The Malpass Sisters
I don’t know these two amazing women personally. I once had a brief conversation with Charly right after purchasing a 9'6" longboard from Summer Sessions, and she complimented it. It was a beautiful board bamboo with white and blue trim. I wish I had kept it. Anyways, these two sisters Sam Malpass and Charly Malpass, create some of the coolest contemporary paintings and artwork and sculptures and are worth checking out if you haven’t already heard of them.
And now I’m off to enjoy a lovely traditional valentine’s day pizza and a movie with beau while he’s parrot, terrier, and housesitting for friends an hour away from our home. How are you spending your Valentine’s Day? Do you exchange gifts with your significant other? Drop me a line in the comments and let me know!
